June 7th 2025 begins the two day SailGP in New York Harbor. The title sponsor is Mubadala Investment Company based in Abu Dhabi. This year, SailGP started its tournament in Mina Zayed, Dubai’s harbor, and it will culminate in Dubai. To be clear, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are two separate cities of the United Arab Emirates.
As the state owned funding arm of the UAE government, Mubadala, has successfully positioned the Emirates banner as an ever present player in global media. Mubadala has made a major footprint in various international sporting events. It entered world cycling and in 2020, the UAE team won the Tour de France. Mubadala funds the UAE National Jiu-Jitsu team, currently participating in the 9th Annual Asian Tournament in Jordan. For tennis fans, Roland Garros is no stranger to Emirates as a sponsor.
SailGP readies itself for the race between Governors Island and the Statue of Liberty. Twelve nations are represented as the fifty foot foils offer spectacular maneuvers cornering the buoys and reaching top speed of sixty miles per hour. The Emirates-Great Britain race boat enters with Dylan Fletcher at the helm. Battling for first place on the leaderboard, February’s Auckland, New Zealand results had the Aussies on top but the Emirates boat outmaneuvered Spain. Nobody can be counted out. The Black Foils of Canada won last year’s race in New York Harbor.
Let’s tip our caps to Mubadala for another year of great competitive sailing. With fair winds, the excitement continues. SailGP tickets provide the best viewing from Governors Island where you can get up close and personal with the teams. New York Ferry service brings you there directly from Manhattan and Brooklyn.
